SUBJECT: PROPER AIR FOR A GIN
STAND.
TOO MUCH AIR AS WELL AS TOO LITTLE AIR WILL CAUSE BOTTOM RIB TAGS IN A
GIN STAND.
TOO MUCH AIR WILL ALSO SUCK SEED, AND PIECES OF STICKS, THAT ARE
FALLING OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE GIN STAND BACK INTO THE BRUSH CHAMBER AND
SEND THEM TO THE LINT CLEANER CHOKING THE LINT CLEANER SAWS.
THE AREA BELOW THE GIN SAWS AND THE BOTTOM BRUSH SCROLL THAT
COMES TO WITHIN ABOUT 1” OF THE GIN SAWS, IS CALLED THE BOTTOM MOTEING AREA
OF THE GIN STAND. IF THE AIR PRESSURE IS CORRECT, THIS AREA WILL DISCHARGE A
LOT OF LEAF TRASH AND DIRT AS WELL AS MOTES AND OTHER TRASH THAT IS MIXED
WITH THE COTTON.
THE AIR PRESSURE IN THE LINT FLUE, MEASURED DIRECTLY BEHIND THE GIN
STAND, SHOULD BE BETWEEN MINUS .25" WC TO PLUS .25" WC WHEN THE GIN STAND IS
GINNING COTTON.
WC MEANS WATER COLUMN. IF YOU PUT A CLEAR SODA STRAW IN A GLASS OF
WATER AND BLOW OR SUCK, UNTIL YOU HAVE MOVED THE WATER UP OR DOWN IN THE
SODA STRAW 1", FROM THE LEVEL OF WATER IN THE GLASS, THIS IS 1" WC OR WATER
COLUMN.
YOU CAN SEE THAT PLUS OR MINUS .25" WC IS NOT VERY MUCH PRESSURE.
YOU CAN HAVE TOO MUCH VACUUM, OR AIR, AS WELL AS TOO MUCH PRESSURE,
OR NOT ENOUGH AIR.
IF YOU HAVE TOO MUCH AIR, THE GIN STAND WILL HAVE BOTTOM RIB TAGS.
THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE AIR WILL BE PULLED THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE RIBS, AT
THE BOTTOM OF THE SAWS. THIS AIR WILL PULL SOME LINT, FUSS, AND TRASH THROUGH
THE BOTTOM OF THE RIBS. SOME OF THIS WILL HIT THE SAW, WHICH IS GOING THE
OTHER DIRECTION. THE RESULT IS THAT THE AIR GOING IN ONE DIRECTION AND THE SAW
GOING THE OTHER SORT OF TIES THIS STUFF IN A KNOT IN THE BOTTOM OF THE RIB.
THE SAWS RUBBING ON THIS BOTTOM RIB TAG, BUILDS UP FRICTION AND
CAUSES A FIRE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE RIB.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH AIR, SOME COTTON STAYS ON THE SAW, AND IS
CARRIED BACK THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE RIBS.
THE HIGHER THE PRESSURE, THE MORE COTTON STAYS ON THE SAW.
SOME OF THIS COTTON AND TRASH WILL HANG IN THE BOTTOM OF THE RIB,
RESULTING IN A BOTTOM RIB TAG, AND POSSIBLE FIRE.
IF THE PRESSURE GETS HIGH ENOUGH, ALL OF THE COTTON WILL STAY ON THE
SAW AND GO BACK THROUGH THE GIN RIBS.
WHEN THIS HAPPENS, YOU USUALLY BREAK OUT A FEW, TO A LOT OF THE RIBS.
TO ACCURATELY MEASURE THE AIR AT THE BACK OF THE GIN STAND, YOU NEED
A GAGE CALLED A MAGNEHELIC GAGE, WITH A 0 TO 1" WC. SCALE.
THIS GAGE HAS A MAXIMUM PRESSURE RANGE OF 1" WC. WITH CONNECTION
PORTS TO MEASURE PLUS AND MINUS PRESSURE. BE SURE TO USE TEFLON TAPE ON
THE FITTINGS, WHEN YOU SCREW THEM INTO THE GAGE. AT THIS LOW AIR PRESSURE,
YOU NEED TO BE ACCURATE IN YOUR MEASUREMENTS.
DRILL 1/8" DIA. HOLES, IN THE LINT FLUES, BEHIND THE GIN STANDS TO
MEASURE THE AIR.
THE HOLES SHOULD BE DRILLED ON TOP OF THE LINT FLUE AND AT LEAST 1
FOOT FROM THE SIDE OF THE LINT FLUE FACING YOU AND SHOULD BE WITHIN ABOUT 3
INCHES OF WHERE THE LINT FLUE CONNECTS TO THE GIN STAND.
WITH THESE GAGES YOU CAN WALK BY AND SEE WHAT THE AIR PRESSURE IS
BEHIND THE GIN STAND AND KNOW IF YOU HAVE A WAD OR NOT.
AS YOU KNOW YOU CANNOT SEE THE WADS IN THE CONDUIT AND WHEN THERE
IS ONE IT WILL ONLY GET BIGGER UNTIL IT TURNS LOOSE AND CHOKES THE LINT
CLEANER.
WE BUILD CONTRLS THAT LET YOU SEE IF THERE IS A WAD IN THE CONDUIT AND
IT CAN AUTOMATICALLY KICK THE GIN STAND OUT, SAVING YOU A LOT OF PROBLEMS IN
YOUR GINNING OPERATION.
